To get this out of the way, this movie will have little character development for half the cast. Before you say, “Wow, this movie must be amazing and I can’t wait to read about this lazy writing!” Let me just say that this movie is meant to be about failure, bad decisions, and worse people. The point is that they don’t develop and continue to be bad musicians, and the film serves as a warning on what happens if you refuse to face your problems and improve yourself.
Hopefully my movie inspirations make sense now.
The Frontman (Florence):
Florence is the only named character in the opening because his arrogance drives him to be the only one to introduces the band, and ends up only saying his own name. I already mentioned a lot about the characters in the summarization of the project's story and the idea, but not how they will end up by the end of the movie.
Florence starts out as an arrogant and envious leader of the band. He is the one who gathered all of the band members and convinced them to join for varying reasons, usually all dangling something they want in their faces to manipulate them into dropping out of school and joining. The error of his ways is going to be repeatedly shoved in his face as Florence continues to screw people over throughout the movie.
In a way, he never grows as person in the film, but after The Keyboardist tells him off, he is presented with two options: become a better person, or continue to hold back others and be a jerk.
The Drummer, 1st to join:
The drummer was raised by neglectful and wealthy parents, and when he wanted to drop out of school to join a band, they didn’t bat an eye and let him and The Treblemakers practice in their garage. The Drummer never learned to work for the things he wants. Although he still craves emotional connection and attention, The Drummer will never do anything to work for it. This is why he jumped at the chance to join the band when Florence proposed he join, in the hopes he will garner attention and fame by having others do the work for him.
The Drummer’s lethargy influences his decision to become a drummer, since the drummer relies on the bassist to keep the tempo. He believed that if just followed The Bassist he would be fine, and blames his mistakes on The Bassist. He was not fine and in fact was terrible, for obvious reasons.
Throughout the movie, The Drummer will not try to do literally anything on his own terms. His actions go with the flow, and Florence takes a liking to him because of this. Additionally, Florence relies on The Drummer for a place to practice. Florence is not hard on The Drummer at all, and is actively holding him back from improving by not pushing him to practice. The Drummer, who enjoys the praise and lack of strictness from Florence, does not feel the need to improve either.
The Keyboardist, 2nd to join:
The Keyboardist is meant to show how even if you have talent and are skilled at what you do and are passionate about, it is never guaranteed you will succeed. In his case, Florence is an envious person who constantly holds him back from being a prosperous pianist, and does not stand up for himself until it's too late. He wanted to be recognized for his skill and hard work, but put his trust in someone who wanted to dim his talent.
What he should have done from the very beginning
The Bassist, 3rd to join:
First I’d like to apologize to the LGBTQ+ community for writing another miserable gay character; I know we need a win right now but that just doesn’t fit in this movie. Sorry :(
The Bassist has no real interest in music until his friend, The Keyboardist, joins Florence's band. The Bassist, being attracted to Florence, desperately wants a way to get close to him and become his friend, and through this motivation, as well as wanting to support The Keyboardist, he drops out and joins The Treblemakers.
The Bassist stars out as a kind of fan of The Frontman, trying to impress him by dressing nicely for their first gig, sympathizing with him, taking up an important role in the band (the bass), actually practicing despite having little passion for the bass, etc. He does not want to ruin his friendship with The Keyboardist, despite Florence's distaste for him and his talent, in fact it's the opposite. The Bassist carries his keyboard for The Keyboardist, since he is in crutches, but still subtly caters to Florence's arrogance by empathizing with him when he is beat up for scamming a guy. Additionally, he feels connected to Florence since they were both the only ones to get hurt by the crowd (The Bassist was hit by a Monster can, not promotion I just wanted to hint at homophobic name calling, like being a monster or unnatural, like the drink.)
As the film progresses, The Bassist will continue to do small favors for Florence, with little recompensation, but as he grows more distant to The Keyboardist, and when The Keyboardist eventually leaves, The Bassist believes he has nowhere else to go, since he has already invested so much into the band (time, money, energy, he literally dropped out of school.) The Bassist serves as another example/warning to not let people take advantage of your loyalty and fondness towards them.
