Audio Major Flat

I kind of set myself up with high expectations on doing a lot of music for this. There is still a chance I include one original song if there is another credits sequence at the end of the opening. Even then, I feel as if it would be too conclusive.

The main sounds I need in the film opening are (but not limited to):

  • background noise (general ambient sound)
  • crowd heckling
  • crowd footsteps (of people leaving)
  • trash hitting band members
  • trash hitting the ground
  • trash being picked up
  • the instruments
  • the frontman’s voice on the mic
  • footsteps for the walking scene
  • dialogue during walking scene
  • crutches on pavement
  • picking up the crutches
  • swinging of being hit by crutches

Though after filming there will be a lot of sound mixing involved. For the background noise, I will simply record a few minutes of ambient sound from the filming location, since there are a lot of things going on, i.e. a fountain, restaurants, etc.

For the dialogue however, I cannot rely on the camera (my partner’s phone) to pick up all of it. In the end I will eventually have to rerecord some voice overs and somehow edit those in. Thankfully there is not too much talking aside from the walking scene, where I would have to focus more on the multiple footsteps, as well as the sound of the crutches.

The main sounds that I hope will be captured on the camera are the instruments. Although recording them in my garage sounds like fun, it would make the editing process go more smoothly if it’s already in the footage.

If they are not however, getting another filming day would be our best bet at getting the audio again. I don’t own all the instruments after all.

The heckling from the crowd is another facet I contemplate. Only having maybe four people be at your band’s performance is bad enough, but when they all start yelling at you, it needs to feel overwhelming. A whopping four voices may not have the impact I’m looking for, and I’m considering finding other ways to amplify the anxiousness that the characters are meant to feel in the moment. In case this happens, I’ll give myself a list of sounds to make the scene more tense:

  • heartbeat
  • ears ringing
  • amplifying the sound of the trash’s impact on the bassist and frontman
  • echoing the voices or impact
  • microphone feedback

Maybe everything goes smoothly and the audio sounds perfect. All’s well that ends well.

Yay!
