The story follows a Frontman and Keyboardist of the band in The Treblemakers. The Frontman, Florence, convinces a guy from his music class, The Keyboardist, to join his band, along with the nameless Bassist and Drummer. Due to The Frontman’s laziness, he cheats a guy into giving him a drum set, a bass, and a guitar. He sets up for The Treblemaker’s first performance, with basically no practice. His lack of understanding for music and self-centered-ness puts The Keyboardist, essentially the only good player, right behind him, covering him in The Frontman’s shadow completely. His irresponsibility and arrogance cause the band to get trash thrown at them, and because of their positions, The Keyboardist is protected by The Frontman. The Frontman then gets found and beat up by the man he scammed. The band walks home, defeated and tired, and The Frontman selfishly wonders what he did wrong, refusing to see the error of his ways.
My main two inspirations for this story are Scott Pilgrim vs. The World and Whiplash. Scott Pilgrim vs. The World is where I see the most similarities between the characters, specifically the members of Sex Bob-Omb and The Treblemakers. Classic indie garage band wants fame, success and recognition, same with The Treblemakers.
The main band wants fame, success, and recognition, just like Scott Pilgrim's main band, but they are not willing to work for it. It's almost the opposite of Whiplash, but the same idea of failing as a musician in the end. Since even though Andrew becomes an amazing drummer, he likely lives a depressing life after the movie ends, like our Frontman.
The main theme of this film is that you have to work hard to get what you want and not everyone succeeds. Each character portrays this theme in a different way.
Now a list of the main characters with my partner's and my lightly filtered thoughts about their character, along with their actors.
All-guy highschool-dropout band: The Treblemakers
Frontman (Florence): Daniel Catarino
Prick, self-centered leader of the band
Leader
Why are they in the band?: Wants to be famous, prosperous, etc.
Frontman entices the boys to join by promising
Owns guitar, bass, and drum set (cheated a guy to get them and gets beat up)
Was in the same music class as Keyboardist
got jealous of Keyboardist and convinced him to drop out and join the band
Drummer: Daniel Schmidt
Messes up second
Lazy
Laid back parents
Seeks attention due to his parents being neglectful
Craves this attention but is too lazy to try and find it
Why are they in the band?: Frontman promises fame, so the drummer wants to do anything that will give him that attention and picks up drumming for this reason.
Drummer goes with the flow and is low effort
Bassist: Juan Palma
Messes up first
Genuinely wants to be great and important
Which is why he chose bassist (backbone of band)
Diff. From the Frontman in which he isn’t in over his head
Bites off more than he can chew
Supportive rich parents
Has a crush on Florence
Motivated by his crush to impress the Frontman
Byler is canon
Eventually comes out to keyboardist (supportive) & drummer (doesn’t care).
Good friendship with keyboardist
Why are they in the band?: Gay for frontman
He knows the Frontman from school, basically a hallway crush. He heard about the band through the keyboardist and picked up bass just so he could join and have a chance to talk to the Frontman.
Other than that he has no musical talent but is one of the only members to actually try and practice and improve despite his lack of passion.
Keyboardist: Juan Aguinaga
Best actual musician, skills ignored by band
Uses crutches
One of his legs is damaged because of the Frontman.
Timid and quiet
Introverted
