A media theory that would be incorporated into this film would be the Copycat Theory. Its simple definition being that “audiences directly imitate or copy what they see in the media.” I feel this theory encapsulates the band’s conception in the first place. The frontman, named Florence, forms the band simply because he selfishly wishes for fame and prosperity with little to no effort due to being envious of talented musicians and popular alternative bands.
Another way that the band (mostly just Florence) relates to Copycat Theory is because of their actions. In the opening, Florence is beat up by a man in the crowd, where the audience will later find out that the man who attacked him was cheated by Florence. The reason for this is because Florence actually scammed that man into getting the instruments in the first place, aside from the Keyboardist (they members don’t have names...yet) who has his own keyboard.
It is indicated that Florence is affected by the media he consumes to make him think that he is essentially untouchable and act on his impulses without punishment. Many action and thriller movies (ironic huh?) impact his ideology that he can do whatever he wants without working for it; for example, getting instruments for cheap by stealing, getting famous without working at all, disrespecting his band members, etcetera. The point of the movie is to disprove this idea that is directly influenced by Copycat Theory.
Thrillers influence the Copycat Theory. To be more specific, action movies and thriller movies often glamorize the violent acts or crimes that are being portrayed onscreen. Movies like Terminator, Fast and Furious, and Mission: Impossible are prime examples of this. All popular movies, each movie, one way or another, makes the heists or crimes being portrayed look effortlessly cool. Which, in turn, could make an impressionable human being think, “Yeah, I can do that,” and proceed to do something majorly stupid. That person is Florence. But he actually receives consequences for his actions. The good ending if you will.
